In the late 1960s, as the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and the French Armée de l'Air prepared to replace their aging ground-attack fleet, the two nations came together to produce a brand new aircraft to suit their needs. Introducing the SEPECAT Jaguar.

Find out more about the Jaguar on our blog: SEPECAT Jaguar: A Collaboration of Aviation Excellence

OUR PLANE'S STORY

XX737 was built as a Jaguar GR.1, first taking flight on August 27, 1974. It was one of twelve Jaguars delivered to No. 54 Squadron in their new home at RAF Coltishall. XX737 was transferred to the Indian Air Force in 1980, then returned briefly to RAF Coltishall No. 6 Squadron in 1982 after being converted to a GR.3A. On March 23, 1983, XX737 was retired to RAF Shawbury, followed by many years in storage in both Britain and the U.S. In 2021, it was acquired by Pima Air & Space Museum, where it will be used in a restoration.

The SEPECAT Jaguar is a ground-attack and reconnaissance aircraft developed and produced as a collaborative effort between the U.K. and France. "SEPECAT" is an abbreviation of “Société Européenne de Production de l'Avion d'École de Combat et d'Appui Tactique”(the "European Company for the Production of Combat Aircraft and Training”). The Jaguar was designed primarily for low-level, close-air support strike missions and intended to replace existing ground-attack aircraft for both Air Forces.

    A Cold War British Classic

This is a beautiful tribute to a Cold War warrior!! Starting life as an Anglo-French project, the Jaguar went on to serve for both the UK and French Air Forces as well as a number of foreign nations from the Middle-East to Africa. Seeing combat with almost every one of those countries, the Jaguar was a solid performer with an impressive record from the Gulf to the Indian subcontinent. This little piece of Cold War history is among the pride of my small collection and an absolute must-have for any student of this critical time.

Jaguar, nice cat that FAE had it, it belongs in my collection.

As usual, a nicely crafted tag by Motoart, my strict criteria for purchases was compromised by my soft heart/being sentimental. I was lucky to live in Quito-Ecuador during my HS years. That was early 80s. At that time Ecuador was having border issues/tension with an unresolved demarking of the southern part of the nation. The FAE/SEPECAT Jaguar allowed the Ecuadorians feel safe from the Peruvian FAP (Fuerza Aérea Peruana) and their incursions/attacks from the south. The Ecuadorian FAE (fuerza Aérea Ecuatoriana) Jaguar were at station/at the ready at the Base Aérea Taura located near Guayaquil, Ecuador. This tag reminds me of my allegiance/gratitude to Ecuador, my friends/classmates and my school. The tag has a nice dark colour, most likely RAF colours happily adopted by Ecuador due to its green/Amazons terrain. This tag was made from a Jaguar that did lots of moving, with a good story to tell.

    A rare nugget

The Jaguar filled a nice void in my collection. I'm one of those happy with the more generic tags and this was nicely stamped. The Jaguar was one of those foreign jets I really liked when I first started my aviation career, so while I am specific and picky now about the tags I get, this one was a winner.
