OUR PLANE'S STORY

44-63864 was built as a P-51D-20NA and accepted by the USAAF in December 1944. ‘463864 served with the 8th Air Force, 78th Fighter Group, 83 Fighter Squadron at RAF Duxford in England throughout the remainder of the War. Pilot First Lt. Hubert “Bill” Davis named this Mustang after his favorite racehorse, Twilight Tear, and flew it in most of his 35 combat missions, shooting down three enemy planes and incapacitating another. Following its wartime service, ‘463864 also served with two other air forces and under private ownership before landing in the Fagen Fighters hangar in 2005. Twilight Tear has since been restored to flying condition, with the genuine skin becoming PlaneTags.

Built during the turbulent times of World War II, this remarkable aircraft showcased the ingenuity, engineering prowess, and determination of its creators and pilots alike. The P-51 Mustang's design allowed it to excel in multiple roles. Its most significant contribution came as a long-range fighter and bomber escort during World War II.
