The Story of N16807

Delivery and Service with Continental Airlines

Our plane (SN: 49261 LN:1153), built as an MD-82, took to the skies for the first time on July 20, 1984. It was delivered to Continental Airlines on September 5, 1984, becoming part of the airline's strategic efforts to modernize its fleet with the introduction of the MD-82. This aircraft joined a growing number of MD-80 series jets that Continental had incorporated to enhance its operational efficiency and passenger comfort. Upon entering service, N16807 was assigned to various domestic routes, quickly establishing itself as a reliable workhorse for the airline.

During its service life, N16807 played a significant role in connecting travelers across the United States. It was frequently seen on popular routes, contributing to Continental's reputation for punctuality and quality service. The aircraft's efficient design allowed it to perform well in a variety of airport environments, from bustling major hubs to smaller regional airports. Over the years, N16807 became a familiar sight to frequent flyers and aviation enthusiasts alike, symbolizing Continental's commitment to modern air travel.

Operational Highlights

N16807's operational history includes a number of noteworthy milestones. The aircraft often participated in special flights, including promotional routes and seasonal services that catered to leisure travelers. Its reliability and performance made it a preferred choice for these occasions, allowing Continental to showcase its modern fleet while providing passengers with a comfortable flying experience.

One significant highlight of N16807's service was its involvement in the airline's extensive route expansion efforts during the 1990s. As Continental expanded its network to include more international destinations, the MD-82 was integral in maintaining robust domestic operations that supported these global endeavors. N16807 contributed to the airline's growth during a time when competition in the aviation industry intensified, showcasing its versatility as a regional and national connector.

Retirement from service

As the aviation industry evolved, so too did the needs of airlines. By the early 2000s, advancements in technology and fuel efficiency led to the gradual retirement of many MD-80 series aircraft, including N16807. After nearly 18 years of dedicated service, N16807 was retired from Continental's fleet, making its final revenue flight in August 2002. In October 2002, it was stored at KMHV.

N16807 After Retirement

After its retirement from commercial airline service, tail number N16807 found a new life at Mojave Air & Space Port, where it was acquired by Doug Scroggins and Scroggins Aviation Mockup & Effects. This transition marked a unique chapter for the aircraft, as it was repurposed for the film industry, specifically for the 2012 thriller Flight, starring Denzel Washington. N16807 was instrumental in creating authentic interior cockpit and cabin scenes, showcasing its significance beyond commercial aviation.

For filming, the fuselage of N16807 was creatively mounted to a wooden airbridge. To depict the intense action sequences where Captain Whitaker struggles to regain control of the aircraft, sections of the MD-82 were integrated into a "rotisserie" setup. This innovative rig allowed the aircraft cabin to rotate 360 degrees, providing dynamic visual effects that enhanced the film's realism. With the fuselage section open at both ends, a camera mounted on a jib boom could easily navigate in and out, capturing every angle without obstruction. The design accommodated up to 14 actors, and for particularly dramatic moments, the cabin was rolled upside down for up to two minutes, adding to the film's gripping narrative.

In the aftermath of its cinematic debut, fuselage sections were removed from N16807 and transformed into PlaneTags in 2024. This repurposing not only preserves the legacy of the MD-82 but also allows aviation enthusiasts and collectors to own a piece of aviation history that played a role in both commercial flight and Hollywood storytelling.
