OUR SHIP'S STORY

About the USS Midway Rudders
Hidden beneath the waterline, USS Midway's two 32-foot rudders helped guide the carrier through nearly 47 years of service.
Decades later, while Midway was berthed at Navy Pier in San Diego, accumulating silt beneath the stern caused the rudders and propeller blades to contact the floor of the bay during extreme low tides. To help protect the historic carrier, an extraordinary underwater operation removed 7½ feet from each rudder.
The material wasn't removed to dismantle Midway. It was removed to help preserve it. Read more on our blog.
From USS Midway to PlaneTags
Through our partnership with USS Midway Museum, MotoArt received a portion of the authentic rudder material removed during the underwater preservation project.
At our facility in Torrance, California, the material was carefully prepared and precision cut into the classic PlaneTags profile collectors know and love.
Each individually numbered PlaneTag preserves an authentic piece of the steering system that helped guide USS Midway through decades of naval history.

PlaneTags are made from the actual navel ship material, not merely stamped metal. Because PlaneTags are made from the real deal, each PlaneTag bears the color, thickness, and wear and tear from the portion of the rudder from which it was cut and it is therefore rare to create two identical PlaneTags. These variations and imperfections are not product flaws. They are part of the beauty. As a result, you will not have an option to select the color of your PlaneTag. The images on this website are provided for reference only and should not be used as the sole basis for choosing a particular PlaneTag.
