The early retirement of Delta’s trusty Mad Dogs ended an era, but the memory of these iconic aircraft will live on! MotoArt has created lasting mementos from the original skin of N982DL, and allowed it to be preserved long after the remaining MD-88s are gone. Add the McDonnell Douglas MD-88 PlaneTag to your collection today and join us in honoring the storied Mad Dogs!
Additionally, for each PlaneTag purchased a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Delta Care Fund. The Delta Care Fund was established in 2007, and operates completely on employee contributions. The Fund’s goal is to help current employees, retirees, and their survivors in the event of financial hardship, catastrophic events, or assistance for continuing education at an accredited college or university.
On June 2, 2020, Delta’s tireless Mad Dog departed on its final scheduled revenue flight. DL88 took off from IAD at 8:41 a.m. and landed in ATL at 9:56 a.m., marking the end of 33 years of service for the MD-88s. Between 1987 and 2020, Delta operated a total of 120 MD-88s. MotoArt is honored to celebrate the legacy of this workhorse, and welcome the famed Mad Dog into the PlaneTags Encyclopedia of Aviation History.
The McDonnell Douglas MD-88 is a twin-engine, single-aisle airliner derived from the DC-9-55. It featured an Electronic Flight Information System (EFIS) instead of the traditional analog cockpit. Delta Air Lines was the largest operator of the MD-88 and used it for short to medium routes across its domestic network. N982DL joined the Delta fleet June 22, 1991 and flew exclusively with Delta until being retired and stored June 30, 2019 at Arkansas International Airport, Blytheville, Arkansas. PlaneTags are made from actual retired aircraft fuselage, not merely stamped metal. Because PlaneTags are made from real fuselage, each PlaneTag bears the color, thickness, and wear and tear from the portion of the fuselage from which it was cut and it is therefore rare to create two identical PlaneTags. These variations and imperfections are not product flaws. They are part of the beauty of PlaneTags. As a result, you will not have an option to select the color of your PlaneTag. The images on this website are provided for reference only and should not be used as the sole basis for choosing a particular PlaneTag.
I love these tags. They are a great way to identify your luggage or backpack. You even get a chance to meet other people who have worked on this type of aircraft.
It was a gift for my hubby and he is a Lead Tech, he is so happy with the way it is done
Price seems a little high but the tags are very nice.
Great service, thanks!
Great always is. I have ordered several
My husband flew the MD 88 for years! This was the best “stocking stuffer” I’ve ever purchased… He flew this particular aircraft MANY times, and recognized the ship number immediately. He was very moved by the sentimentality of the gift, so much so, I bought his favorite F/O a set for a gift also. Thank you…like they say, "sometimes it the smallest things that mean the most".
Loved this tag and all of my PlaneTags. I got one for myself, my sister, and my mom because this was one of the planes we flew on frequently when we visited our grandparents. Now that they are both gone, the tag is a nice reminder of our family travels.
So glad there has been a series of DL aircraft. Another great release and extremely pleased. Excellent quality and great service!
You’re the best love the tags and keep them coming!!!!
Beautiful engraving on this release!
I ordered the Blue MD88 tag. They sent me the white one by accident. They quickly sent me the correct one and sent a mailer for me to send back the white one! All quick and easy. My husband flew the MD 88 for 14 years and lived the tag when I gave it to him.
love them they go everywhere with me
Had to have it of course. Very happy with it!
I bought this as a gift and it was great quality and just as pictured. Would definitely recommend!
