    OUR PLANE'S STORY

For more than three decades, the Space Shuttle relied on Solid Rocket Boosters to provide the thrust needed to lift astronauts, satellites, and scientific missions into orbit.

This collection preserves two authentic components from that launch system.

Aft Skirt Serial Number 13 supported 11 Space Shuttle missions between 1982 and 2002, including flights involving Columbia, Challenger, Atlantis, Discovery, and Endeavour. According to California Science Center records, its remarkable flight history includes missions that helped deploy satellites, conduct scientific research, service the Hubble Space Telescope, and assemble the International Space Station.

The SRB Hold Down Post played an equally important role on the launch pad. It secured the Solid Rocket Booster to the Mobile Launch Platform during countdown and was released at ignition, allowing the Shuttle stack to begin its journey into space.

Earlier this year, while working with the California Science Center, the MotoArt team helped prepare Aft Skirt Serial Number 13 for its permanent display as part of the Solid Rocket Booster Walk-Through Experience in the future Kent Kresa Space Gallery. During that process, authentic material was preserved, allowing these remarkable artifacts to continue inspiring future generations through PlaneTags. Read the full story on our blog.

    PlaneTags are:

      • Authentic - made from actual retired aircraft fuselage, not merely stamped metal.
      • Unique -  each PlaneTag bears the color, thickness, and wear and tear from the portion of the fuselage from which it was cut and it is therefore rare to create two identical PlaneTags.
      • Collectible - each one is numbered in a limited edition and comes attached to a display card.
      • Versatile - comes with a durable metal ring, strong enough to attach to luggage or keys or display.

PlaneTags are made from actual retired aircraft fuselage, not merely stamped metal. Because PlaneTags are made from real fuselage, each PlaneTag bears the color, thickness, and wear and tear from the portion of the fuselage from which it was cut and it is therefore rare to create two identical PlaneTags. These variations and imperfections are not product flaws. They are part of the beauty of PlaneTags. As a result, you will not have an option to select the color of your PlaneTag. The images on this website are provided for reference only and should not be used as the sole basis for choosing a particular PlaneTag.

    • Hold-Down Posts: Four steel hold-down posts anchored each booster to the Mobile Launch Platform until explosive nuts released the booster at liftoff.

    NASA SOLID ROCKET BOOSTER PERFORMANCE

    • Range: 122 nautical miles downrange before splashdown
    • Max Speed: 3,094 mph at booster seperation
    • Ceiling: Separated at 150,000 ft; ballistic apogee 220,000 ft
    • Empty Weight: 192,000–200,000 lb
    • Thrust:126 seconds
    • Burn Tim: 122 nautical miles downrange before splashdown
    • Engine: Eight booster separation motors fired approximately 2 minutes after launch to push the SRBs away from the External Tank.
    • Recovery System: 3x parachutes (one drogue and two main) slowed the booster for ocean splashdown and recovery.

Continue Your Journey Through NASA History

Explore more authentic NASA artifacts and own another piece of the machines that helped make spaceflight history.

    • Mobile Launcher Platform 2 (MLP-2)– Before every Space Shuttle launch, MLP-2 supported the Shuttle stack on the launch pad at Kennedy Space Center. Today, it continues its legacy as part of NASA's Artemis program, helping prepare the next generation of lunar missions.
    • NASA T-38N Talon N910NA - For decades, NASA astronauts have trained in the T-38 Talon to maintain the precision, decision-making, and teamwork required for spaceflight. N910NA continues that tradition as part of NASA's active astronaut training fleet.
    • NASA Learjet 24A PlaneTags – N805NA - Created from NASA’s Learjet 24A N805NA, this aircraft supported atmospheric research and airborne science missions, contributing to the study of Earth and space environments.
    • NASA AT-38B Talon N864NA - Originally built for advanced pilot training, N864NA later served NASA as a chase aircraft supporting research and flight testing. It represents the aircraft that helped prepare pilots and astronauts for the challenges of flight.
    • NASA C-121G Super Constellation N420NA - Known as one of the most elegant airliners ever built, this Super Constellation later served NASA supporting research, logistics, and program operations during the early years of America's space program.
    • NASA NF-101A Voodoo 53-2422 - This modified F-101 Voodoo served NASA as a high-performance research aircraft, contributing valuable data that advanced aeronautics and flight safety during the agency's experimental flight programs.
    • NASA Learjet 24A N805NA - mall but versatile, NASA's Learjet 24A supported atmospheric research, instrument testing, and engineering projects, demonstrating that groundbreaking science often comes from unexpected aircraft.
    • Lockheed SR-71A 61-7971 SOLD OUT - After its legendary career with the U.S. Air Force, SR-71A 61-7971 continued pushing the boundaries of flight as a NASA research aircraft, supporting high-speed aeronautical testing and technology development. L-300 Starlifter Coaster Set - Crafted from authentic Lockheed L-300 Starlifter aluminum, these coasters preserve the legacy of one of NASA's most important cargo aircraft while adding aerospace history to your home or office.

*Important Notice – Please Read Carefully

PlaneTags are made from actual retired aircraft fuselage, not merely stamped metal. Because PlaneTags are made from real fuselage, each PlaneTag bears the color, thickness, and wear and tear from the portion of the fuselage from which it was cut and it is therefore rare to create two identical PlaneTags. These variations and imperfections are not product flaws. They are part of the beauty of PlaneTags. As a result, you will not have an option to select the color of your PlaneTag. The images on this website are provided for reference only and should not be used as the sole basis for choosing a particular PlaneTag.

Caution: Not recommended for children under 8 years of age. This product contains chemical-based paint which may cause respiratory irritation if ingested or inhaled in large quantities. Keep out of mouth.
