Lockheed L-300 Coasters – Kuiper Airborne Observatory
Made from a One-of-a-Kind NASA Aircraft
Introducing a new collectible with cosmic origins: L-300 Coasters, crafted from the skin of the only Lockheed L-300 ever built, later transformed by NASA into the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. These limited-edition coasters are cut from authentic aircraft material and preserve the legacy of a jet that helped unlock the secrets of the universe.
Add history to your home, desk, or hangar with coasters that are as functional as they are fascinating.
OUR PLANE'S STORY
The Lockheed L-300 was a prototype civilian version of the military C-141A Starlifter, but it never entered production. In 1972, Lockheed donated the lone L-300 to NASA, where it was converted into the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO). Equipped with a 36-inch telescope, the aircraft flew over 2,000 missions and played a key role in major discoveries, like detecting Pluto’s atmosphere and observing Uranus’s rings.
In 2025, MotoArt partnered with NASA to preserve this one-of-a-kind aircraft before it was scrapped. These coasters are made from the same skin as our L-300 PlaneTags. Read more here: L-300 to KAO: How Lockheed's Cargo Jet Became a Flying Telescope

PlaneTags are Handmade Aviation Tags
- Authentic - made from actual retired aircraft fuselage, not merely stamped metal.
- Unique - each PlaneTag bears the color, thickness, and wear and tear from the portion of the fuselage from which it was cut and it is therefore rare to create two identical PlaneTags.
- Please Note: Due to limited quantities, combination colors you may receive will vary.

PlaneTags are made from actual retired aircraft fuselage, not merely stamped metal. Because PlaneTags are made from real fuselage, each PlaneTag bears the color, thickness, and wear and tear from the portion of the fuselage from which it was cut and it is therefore rare to create two identical PlaneTags. These variations and imperfections are not product flaws. They are part of the beauty of PlaneTags. As a result, you will not have an option to select the color of your PlaneTag.
