“Leading the way, with TWA”, went the catchy commercial jingle that many still remember today. Trans World Airlines operated from 1930 to 2001 and truly did “lead the way” for decades as one of the top airlines in the world. TWA promised luxurious and fast flights anywhere on the globe. With the DC-9 they were able to bring the globe to smaller-sized airports that lacked the infrastructure needed for larger jets.
Our aircraft was delivered to Ozark Air Lines in February 1968, adding to their DC-9 fleet. The TV commercials proclaiming that “Go Getters, Go Ozark”, accompanied continued fleet and route growth. During the 1980’s, Ozark and TWA owned over 80% of the passenger services at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, making it a major hub. Ozark then merged with TWA in 1986, and N976Z was one of 50 planes added to the TWA fleet. 76Z was ultimately withdrawn from use in May 2000 and stored at Mojave Air & Space Port until MotoArt recovered it in 2021.
N976Z was painted in TWA’s iconic Twin Stripe livery, with easy-to-read red block lettering. The lower stripes and the tail rhombus of the Ozark logo were adapted to the new TWA paint scheme. The livery was highly discernible, seen clearly in the clouds, and within many commercials, movies and TV shows. This timeless logo still stirs the memories of those who grew up fascinated with airplanes and air travel during TWA’s reign of the skies. Read more about 76Z on our PlaneTags blog.

PlaneTags are made from actual retired aircraft fuselage, not merely stamped metal. Because PlaneTags are made from real fuselage, each PlaneTag bears the color, thickness, and wear and tear from the portion of the fuselage from which it was cut and it is therefore rare to create two identical PlaneTags. These variations and imperfections are not product flaws. They are part of the beauty of PlaneTags. As a result, you will not have an option to select the color of your PlaneTag. The images on this website are provided for reference only and should not be used as the sole basis for choosing a particular PlaneTag.

Not often you come across one of the backbone aircraft of TWA. I really love the red off of the DC-9 and the many patterns from the front serial numbers in red.
I love the faded red of this historic jet. I never flew on a DC-9, but a 727 once. Sadly TWA was out of business by the time I started flying. I was about 7, so barely missed them. My first flight was 2002 with NWA, I think.
Such great history with this airline and plane. Never got a chance to fly on a DC-9 but would never pass up the opportunity to own a piece of such an iconic aircraft!
Simple but significant release - White, Red, and Red/White. Such an iconic airline and aircraft. Glad to have them in my collection. They always draw comments when on my backpack or camera bags.
This is a great tag, with great history. Really like the quality in the engraving and the simplicity of the color.
Nabbed this one on a Father's Day sale and it was a great find! The faded paint and wear make for an authentic out-of-the-desert collectible!
Grabbed one of these during the Father's Day sale and it exceeded my expectations! The minor marks on the faded red paint all give it an authentic, right out of the desert look.
Did Douglas really build this?? I'm not sure what part of the DC9 this came from, but it bends too easily to be used as a bag tag!
Love the tag. Always draws a comment, even from airline desk agents. Tough to get on, but with persistence, I finally got it. Now it’s on for good.
Another great tag. Got this one specifically because my father worked for TWA for 25 years in the reservations and faring department, so this has a sentimental value for me. As usual, great tag, great quality and love all they produce!
Great looking Tag! You can see the effects of the Sun baking the skin of the aircraft after more than 20 years in the desert. Really well worth it!
Great Tags from a great plane. The red is stiil vivid and the white tag looks good too. Flew the DC-9-31 many times, first time with Continental Airlines in '67. Can only recommend these!
