The Story of N16807

Delivery and Service with Continental Airlines

Our plane (SN: 49261 LN:1153), built as an MD-82, took to the skies for the first time on July 20, 1984. It was delivered to Continental Airlines on September 5, 1984, becoming part of the airline's strategic efforts to modernize its fleet with the introduction of the MD-82. This aircraft joined a growing number of MD-80 series jets that Continental had incorporated to enhance its operational efficiency and passenger comfort. Upon entering service, N16807 was assigned to various domestic routes, quickly establishing itself as a reliable workhorse for the airline.

This transition marked a unique chapter for the aircraft, as it was repurposed for the film industry, specifically for the 2012 thriller Flight, starring Denzel Washington. N16807 was instrumental in creating authentic interior cockpit and cabin scenes, showcasing its significance beyond commercial aviation.

 

 

For filming, the fuselage of N16807 was creatively mounted to a wooden airbridge. To depict the intense action sequences where Captain Whitaker struggles to regain control of the aircraft, sections of the MD-82 were integrated into a "rotisserie" setup. This innovative rig allowed the aircraft cabin to rotate 360 degrees, providing dynamic visual effects that enhanced the film's realism. With the fuselage section open at both ends, a camera mounted on a jib boom could easily navigate in and out, capturing every angle without obstruction. The design accommodated up to 14 actors, and for particularly dramatic moments, the cabin was rolled upside down for up to two minutes, adding to the film's gripping narrative.

 

 

 

 

In the aftermath of its cinematic debut, fuselage sections were removed from N16807 and transformed into PlaneTags in 2024.
