Description
Own a piece of life aboard the USS Midway.
These PlaneTags are crafted from authentic watertight door material used below deck, where sailors lived and worked throughout the ship’s 47 years of service.
About the USS Midway
Commissioned in 1945, the USS Midway (CV-41) served for 47 years, longer than any aircraft carrier in the 20th century. It played key roles from the Cold War through Operation Desert Storm.
More than 110,000 sailors served aboard before it became a museum, now welcoming over one million visitors each year.
Life Below Deck
Below the flight deck, a network of compartments kept the ship moving.
Watertight doors were central to that system. Built from high-strength steel, they allowed daily movement while maintaining the ship’s integrity at sea. The smaller personnel door was used constantly, while the larger cargo door remained secured unless equipment needed to pass through.
OUR PLANE'S STORY

The Story Behind the Material
These tags are made from authentic USS Midway watertight doors, including doors such as 2-75-6. Located below deck, these doors connected the spaces where sailors lived and worked. Layers of paint and wear reflect years of daily use.
Through MotoArt’s partnership with the USS Midway Museum, this material has been preserved and given a second life. Each tag is cut and finished in Torrance, California, retaining its original character. No two are alike. Read more about it on our blog: Life Aboard USS Midway: The Doors That Held It All Together

PlaneTags are made from actual retired aircraft fuselage, not merely stamped metal. Because PlaneTags are made from real fuselage, each PlaneTag bears the color, thickness, and wear and tear from the portion of the fuselage from which it was cut and it is therefore rare to create two identical PlaneTags. These variations and imperfections are not product flaws. They are part of the beauty of PlaneTags. As a result, you will not have an option to select the color of your PlaneTag. The images on this website are provided for reference only and should not be used as the sole basis for choosing a particular PlaneTag.
