    Description

PLEASE NOTE: Only available as boxed sets with aluminum cards. Shipping will begin the week of September 21.

A genuine piece of the Reno racing line.

For nearly six decades, the National Championship Air Races transformed the Nevada desert into one of aviation's most legendary racing grounds. Aircraft flew lap after lap around a course defined not by pavement, but by pylons.

Now, for the first time, PlaneTags has preserved material from the course itself.

The Outer #4 Official Pylon PlaneTag is crafted from authentic corrugated material recovered from one of the pylons that marked the historic Reno racecourse.

    OUR PLANE'S STORY

The Reno course was marked by approximately 50-foot poles known as “sticks,” topped with highly visible sections of corrugated material known as “cans.” Racers had to remain outside the pylons as they made their way around the course, with pylon judges watching each turn.

It was racing at extraordinary speeds and remarkably low altitudes. Today, the National Championship Air Races describes pylon racing as taking place between approximately 50 and 250 feet, with aircraft capable of exceeding 500 mph. Outer #4 was part of that unmistakable Reno landscape.

    From Reno to MotoArt

Reno also holds a special place in MotoArt history. More than 20 years ago, Dave Hall brought some of MotoArt's earliest aircraft furniture to the Reno Air Races. As MotoArt grew, we continued returning to Reno, and when PlaneTags came along, we returned again with a PlaneTags booth.

After the final National Championship Air Races in Reno, MotoArt was contacted about preserving material from the historic racecourse. The pylons were coming to MotoArt. For a company whose own story had been intertwined with Reno for more than two decades, the opportunity was something special. Read about it on our blog.

    A Different Kind of PlaneTag

Over the years, PlaneTags has preserved material from several aircraft with histories at Reno, including Dreadnought, Vampire, Argonaut and Full Noise.

This time, we're preserving something different.

Not one of the aircraft that raced around Reno's pylons, but a piece of the course they raced around.

Each Outer #4 PlaneTag is individually numbered and will vary in color, texture, markings and wear depending on where it was cut from the original material. Those differences are part of its history and make each tag unique.

Preserve a piece of the Reno racing line.

    Product Details

    • Authentic material from Reno Outer #4
    • Corrugated metal approximately .100" thick
    • Original painted surface may measure up to .030" thick
    • Individually numbered
    • Made in Torrance, California by MotoArt
    • Official National Championship Air Races release
    • Variations in color, texture, markings and wear are expected

More From the Reno Racing Line

Outer #4 isn’t our first connection to the aircraft that raced around Reno’s pylons. PlaneTags has preserved material from several racers with their own histories on the Reno course.

    • Dreadnought - One of Reno’s great Unlimited racers, the Hawker Sea Fury Dreadnought earned six Unlimited Gold championships during its remarkable racing career. Our Dreadnought PlaneTags preserve authentic material from Race #8.
    • Vampire - This Aero Vodochody L-39 became part of Reno history with a Jet Gold Championship in 2015. Vampire PlaneTags preserve a piece of an aircraft that once competed around the same pylons as Outer #4.
    • Argonaut - The Hawker Sea Fury Argonaut was a familiar competitor in Reno’s Unlimited field. PlaneTags made from Argonaut preserve another piece of the aircraft and personalities that made Reno racing unforgettable.
    • Full Noise - Graeme Frew’s Yakovlev Yak-3UA Full Noise, Race #35, brought a little New Zealand flair to Reno’s Unlimited field. PlaneTags later preserved authentic material from this distinctive Reno racer.

We’ve preserved pieces of the racers. Now preserve a piece of the course they raced around.

    Perfect Aviation Gift

    PlaneTags are:

      • Authentic - made from actual retired aircraft fuselage, not merely stamped metal.
      • Unique -  each PlaneTag bears the color, thickness, and wear and tear from the portion of the fuselage from which it was cut and it is therefore rare to create two identical PlaneTags.
      • Collectible - each one is numbered in a limited edition and comes attached to a display card.
      • Versatile - comes with a durable metal ring, strong enough to attach to luggage or keys or display.

*Important Notice – Please Read Carefully

PlaneTags are made from actual retired aircraft fuselage, not merely stamped metal. Because PlaneTags are made from real fuselage, each PlaneTag bears the color, thickness, and wear and tear from the portion of the fuselage from which it was cut and it is therefore rare to create two identical PlaneTags. These variations and imperfections are not product flaws. They are part of the beauty of PlaneTags. As a result, you will not have an option to select the color of your PlaneTag. The images on this website are provided for reference only and should not be used as the sole basis for choosing a particular PlaneTag.
