The McDonnell Douglas DC-9 played a significant role in the history of aviation, leaving a lasting impact on the industry. Northwest Airlines was one of the largest operators of the DC-9, utilizing the aircraft extensively throughout its fleet, enabling the airline to expand its domestic and regional routes. N920RW, a DC-9-31, served the final 19 years of a 37 year long career with Northwest before retirement in 2005, and becoming a PlaneTags legend in 2023.

OUR PLANE'S STORY

S/N 47163 rolled out of the McDonnell Douglas Aircraft plant and took its first flight on January 12, 1968. Like many of the DC-9s at the time, its career would span decades, outlast airlines, and land them right in the middle of some of the most expansive and turbulent times in the airline industry.

Beginning its career in February 1968 as N8940E with Eastern Air Lines, it flew short to medium haul routes to smaller and intermediate sized cities. In 1977, re-registered as N920RW, it began flying with Hughes Airwest, which was bought out in 1980 by Republic Airlines, who operated the largest DC-9 fleet in the world. In October 1986, N920RW changed its colors once again when Republic and Northwest Airlines merged. After accumulating 96,653 total flight hours, N920RW retired in 2005.

The DC-9's success contributed to the growth and profitability of Northwest Airlines and similar carriers, while its reliability and economic efficiency helped shape the future development of subsequent aircraft designs. Northwest was acquired by Delta Air Lines in 2008, who then became the first and last airline to fly scheduled DC-9 flights. The DC-9 was cemented in history as a reliable and efficient workhorse that connected smaller cities and airports to a wider range of destinations.

Now is your chance to own a piece of Northwest Airlines history, a connection to the red and white DC-9s that inspired you to travel. Add Northwest DC-9 PlaneTags to your collection today.

    Love the classic Northwest!

The classic Northwest DC-9 is one of the most iconic aircraft to grace the US skies. What a great opportunity to be able to purchase a flag tag from it! Couldn't be happier with the stars on mine!

Like Josh, I went back for thirds

Because I have very fond memories of flying NWA out of MSP, I had to collect all the colors. Sadly, I missed the red/pearl combo, but did manage to get a solid red and pearl. And a black/pearl combo. The flags sold out immediately, I bet.

Went Back For Thirds! (NW Red)

Nice tag, but the red wasn't as sharp as I was expecting. Still, that could be from years in the desert and other tags may have the trademark Northwest red in sharper finishes!

    NWA DC-9

Perhaps not the most iconic NWA livery, but the colors still look quite good in tag form. A nice addition to the collection.

    Aviation history

Another of aviation history, Northwest Airlines disappeared from the sky since its merge with Delta, same with the early variants of the DC-9. So thanks to Motoart for preserving, a nice addition to any collection with amazing color variations.

    NWA Pearl

While the livery isn't my favorite the pearl sure is a great addition to the DC-9 collection.

    Red Version

Purchased the red version of this tag. Flew on DC-9s and it is a great keepsake.

    Nostalgia

This tag reminds me of my many flights on NWA aircraft. Love the tone of the gray tag.

    New Truck Or NWA Tags?

Yeah, I went with more NWA tags than I can count. What a fantastic release...so many combos, and the Flag Package was amazing! Thanks PlaneTags for this commercial release! Now pardon me while I go out to my 2001 Dodge Dakota sitting in the parking lot...still glad I made the decision ;)

Just Haaaad to Have that Ship Number! (DC-9 Black/Pearl)

One of the fun things about PlaneTags is when you can snag a recognizable part of the livery (in this case, the ship number under the cockpit window, at least I think) and that's what I was after with the black/pearl combo. This was a nice addition to the collection!

On the Podium of Favorite Tags (DC-9 Red/Pearl)

When I think of Northwest, I think of red and gray and hoped to get roughly a 50/50 split on my combo. Got exactly what I hoped for and it's one of my favorite tags!

    NWA DC-9

I was trying to get my hands on a piece of this plane back in 2020/2021 (specifically the 9960 on the nose or tail), but it was very expensive. Lo and behold when this was announced I jumped at the opportunity to get a piece of this A/C. I grew up flying Northwest and it will always have a special place in my heart. I have it on my backpack so almost every day I see it and carry it around. Got the red/pearl combo and it’s fantastic.

    Love It!!

I grew up near MSP airport and remember seeing all of the Northwest planes taking off and landing. I’m so glad to finally have a piece of a former Northwest aircraft. The red color is great and the quality is top notch as always.

    DC-9 31 Series

I bought the Flag package because this is the first series I have seen featuring a variety of colors/combos. Furthermore, this aircraft entered service in 1968, a year I remember quite well. Though I have never flown with nwa, I flew with this type very often in the sixties and seventies. A great series honoring a venerable aircraft of the Jet Age. Well made and great looking Tags!
