Continuing with Delta’s legacy of aircraft and aviation history, MotoArt celebrates the incredible TriStar. Introducing the Delta Air Lines Lockheed L-1011-1 TriStar PlaneTags, created from N786DL.

The first delivery of the Lockheed L-1011 took place in April 1972; Delta Air Lines received their first TriStar in October 1973. From then until the last Delta TriStar took its final flight in 2001, the airline would fly 70 of the wide-body tri-jet airliners and employ the largest L-1011 fleet in the commercial aviation industry. Delta was the only major airline to fly with the L-1011-1, -100, -200, -250, and -500 variants. The L-1011 was equipped with new technology such as an advanced navigation system that linked with the automatic landing system and autopilot, as well as the CAT-IIIB Autoland system that could perform a landing automatically, even in bad weather. Further, the TriStar offered better fuel efficiency in the midst of a fuel crisis during the 1970’s.

OUR PLANE'S STORY

Our L-1011-1 first took flight in August 1975 and was delivered as N332EA to Eastern Air Lines in November 1975. In December 1991, it was registered as N786DL and delivered to Delta, where it remained in service until 1999. It, along with Delta’s massive L-1011 fleet (up to 56 TriStars in use at one time), serviced routes between 79 domestic and international cities, including Delta's first transatlantic and transpacific destinations. As part of Delta’s Wide Ride Fleet, the L-1011 offered roomy cabins, comfortable seating, and a quieter, smoother ride.

    The Delta Golden jet

WOW, the tri-star was one of my favorite aircraft, and having the colors of the airline with the famous aircraft was an amazing buy. One of my favorite Delta combinations.

    The famous Tri-Star!

The L1011 is one of my favorite jets and Delta is my favorite airline. I also adore the paint scheme that this one has so this purchase was a no-brainer for me.

    Piece of Brilliance

So happy to now own a piece of a Delta L10-11. I worked for Delta in the 90's, probably the best years of my life. I think I worked inside and possibly flew on every L10-11 Delta owned over those years. I loved this aircraft. The hum the 3 Rolls Royce engines gave both inside and outside the aircraft was hypnotic. Was a smooth ride for sure. Could not be happier with the piece I received!!!

    Favorite Commercial Airframe

The Lockheed L-1011 has always been my favorite commercial airframe. 5 of the first 10 PlaneTags I purchased were L-1011s. This Delta release remains one of my favorites. I took my first flight in January 1982 from CHA-LAX. And though I can't remember, there's a good chance it was aboard a Delta L-1011. Still doing research to try and nail down those specifics. Thanks for a stellar release with solids as gorgeous as the combos.

    Red/white split

I was to late out when these tags was released, but then a little further I saw on the Facebook group that the red/white tags was available. So I bought the tag and it was a very thick tag with double layer of metall. The pattern was also very interesting.

It Just Means That Much (L-1011 Red)

I originally thought I'd only buy one of these. I ended up buying three. "It just means that much" was my reasoning. Much to my surprise, the Red tag is a thick chick and is actually somewhat heavy in the hand, which is different and cool!

It Doesn't Get Much Better Than This (L-1011 Blue)

I almost crawled out of my skin when I saw PT was releasing a Delta L-1011, an airline/airplane combo I only got to fly 8 times, but with so many memories and so much influence on my love for travel and flying. More than proud to take this one along with me on my backpack.

    The Holy Grail

No aircraft/airline combination is more emblematic of my evolution as an aviation enthusiast than Delta and the L-1011. The Tritanic became an instant favorite of mine, especially since it meant we were going to Puerto Rico (three years in a row). I had hoped to go on the type's last flight in 2001 and was steered wrong by their reservation line, so I jumped at the opportunity to buy a solid blue one and broke my own one-tag-per-plane rule by adding a blue and white as well as a solid red. Why? Because, as I said on the spreadsheet where I keep track of my tags, "It just means that much." Plus, these tags are thick! CHONKY!

A piece of the first commercial airliner I ever flew on

This plane tag was a special one for me because a Delta L1011 was the first ever commercial airliner I ever flew on (when I was a child). So I was very excited when this one was released by PlaneTags. The quality of PlaneTag items is hard to beat and they look exactly the same in person as they do on their website. It's also nice that there are a variety of colours to choose from for each individual plane tag. You just have to be fast about ordering because the more popular colors tend to sell out fast. As of the end of 2023, my PlaneTag collection is up to 8 individual tags, one plane tag for every airline and aircraft type I've flown on. That makes my collection special to me as I can look at them all handing in my office and see all the airlines and airplanes I've flown on.
