Long before the F-4 Phantom II became one of the world's most recognizable military aircraft, one aircraft helped prove the design was ready for carrier service.
Crafted from authentic material from McDonnell Douglas F4H-1F Phantom II BuNo 143391, these individually numbered PlaneTags preserve a piece of one of the earliest and most historically significant Phantoms ever built.
As the sixth production Phantom, BuNo 143391 became the first Phantom to successfully complete carrier suitability trials. On February 15, 1960, it launched from and recovered aboard USS Independence, demonstrating that the Navy's revolutionary new fighter was ready for life at sea.
The Phantom would go on to become one of the most successful military aircraft in aviation history. BuNo 143391 helped write its first chapter.
OUR PLANE'S STORY
Every legendary aircraft has a beginning. The McDonnell F-4 Phantom II became one of the defining military aircraft of the Cold War, serving with the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and allied nations around the world. But before the Phantom earned its legendary reputation, it had to prove it could safely operate from an aircraft carrier.
Built as F4H-1F BuNo 143391, this aircraft was among the very first production Phantoms. Unlike later operational aircraft assigned to fleet squadrons, it served in the Phantom's early development program, helping engineers and Navy pilots evaluate the aircraft's handling and carrier suitability.
On February 15, 1960, BuNo 143391 became the first Phantom to successfully complete carrier suitability trials aboard USS Independence (CVA-62). During testing, the aircraft completed 17 arrested landings and 18 catapult launches, demonstrating that the Phantom possessed the performance and handling qualities required for carrier operations.
Those successful trials helped clear the way for the Phantom's entry into operational service. Over the following decades, more than 5,000 Phantoms were built, flying missions around the world and establishing the aircraft as one of history's most successful military jet fighters.
Later in its life, BuNo 143391 was acquired by retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Jack G. Wilson, who hoped to restore the aircraft. As research into its history continued, experts confirmed that the aircraft was not only one of the earliest Phantoms built, but the very aircraft that completed the Phantom's first successful carrier suitability trials. Although restoration was ultimately not practical, its historical significance remained.
