It replaced earlier Yakovlev fighters in frontline units and represented the peak of piston-engine development before the jet age reshaped military aviation.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAfter the collapse of the Soviet Union, original Yakovlev factory tooling and engineering drawings made it possible to construct a limited number of continuation aircraft. Between 1991 and 2002, only ten Yak-3s were built using this original tooling. ZK-VVS is one of those ten.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eConfigured as a Yak-3UA, this aircraft was fitted with an Allison V-1710 engine, the same American V-12 used in aircraft such as the P-40 Warhawk and P-38 Lightning.
