The North American Aviation P/F-82 Twin Mustang was a long-range, high-altitude escort fighter, produced for the USAAF. The unlikely-looking aircraft, consisting of two mated P-51H fuselages, was built to escort bombers on long-range missions during World War II. However, the war ended before the Twin Mustang could begin to prove itself. It became the last piston-engined fighter ordered into production. The P/F-82 adapted to many different roles, including long-range fighter/escort, attack bomber, and long-range reconnaissance support. They were relied heavily on during the Cold and Korean Wars, but even so, only 272 were manufactured.
Today, there are only five Twin Mustangs of any variant remaining, one of which is #44-83887. It was produced in spring 1945 and was the second of only two XP-82 prototypes. It took its first flight in June 1945 and served as NAA’s official aircraft for performance tests for the USAAF. In 1947, ‘887 was transferred to NACA, the predecessor to NASA, and used as a testbed for ramjet engines. In December 1949, ‘887 was damaged beyond repair after it slid off an icy runway. It was later acquired around 1965 by Walter Soplata and it remained on his property until 2008 when famed warbird restorer Tom Reilly purchased it.
It took 10 and half years, but Reilly restored the ultra-rare XP-82 Twin Mustang to airworthy flying condition. MotoArt had the privilege of obtaining the original aircraft skin that was removed during the restoration project. We are excited to offer North American Aviation XP-82 Twin Mustang PlaneTags for your collection. Read more about this incredible aircraft here on our blog.
The XP-82 Twin Mustang PlaneTags are numbered to 1,700. They are made from the original skin pulled during the restoration of #44-83887. Don’t miss the opportunity to add a Twin Mustang PlaneTag to your collection. This is a very limited edition of a truly special aircraft.

*Important Notice – Please Read Carefully
PlaneTags are made from actual retired aircraft fuselage, not merely stamped metal. Because PlaneTags are made from real fuselage, each PlaneTag bears the color, thickness, and wear and tear from the portion of the fuselage from which it was cut and it is therefore rare to create two identical PlaneTags. These variations and imperfections are not product flaws. They are part of the beauty of PlaneTags. As a result, you will not have an option to select the color of your PlaneTag. The images on this website are provided for reference only and should not be used as the sole basis for choosing a particular PlaneTag.

It's fun to have a piece of this unique aircraft. What's better than one Mustang? How about 2...
The first time I discovered this aircraft was when I saw the old Monogram 1/72nd scale model of it. Was fascinated by the design and through school & local libraries found about the aircraft. Of course, I got the kit and built it. Found it amazing that I actually own a piece of one of these aircraft now.
These tags are great! The patina on the interior ones is stunning! Can't believe they're still in stock!
Who couldn't be more excited for a twin mustang tag? Love all of the combinations I have received from this! Thanks Planetags!
Great tag!! My twin mustang came with some nice rivets, and I am lucky to have such a historical piece! No clue how it is not sold out by now.
Got a nice rivert tag. Very sweet tag indeed !
I love anything WWII Warbird and this is no exception! Such and amazing quirk from the early days of experimental war planes. The P-51 is awesome as it is, but slap two together and what do you have? Twice the amount of awesome! Love this tag so much!
I can't believe I can hold a piece of a Twin Mustang in my hand! I love this PlaneTag so much - it's one of my favorites because it has such character. This will be passed down to my grandkids!
Great way to appreciate one of the coolest aircraft!
Only 5 of these exist in the world and I own a piece of one. Unbelievable. Great customer service. Excellent and speedy delivery. The piece is phenomenal. Keep up the great job.
Having seen one of the 1st flights of this restored aircraft, I had to get a piece of this history for my son. He was thrilled. Note, this one was stamped a bit lighter than others and more difficult to distinguish. Also, a bit thinner.
Tag was in such poor condition, it was almost impossible to tell what type of aircraft it came from, compared to the advertised Tag shown above.
Great experience. Beautiful plane tag. This plane tag was exciting for me to purchase as I climbed all over this aircraft as a young teenager. We used to sneak back into Soplata's property to look at the aircraft. Never did any harm, we were just amazed that this aircraft sanctuary existed where it did. Remember the XP-82 as it always stuck out in my mind. Also remember the F4U with its nose high attitude and the rare F2G Corsair. I have pictures of many of the aircraft somewhere. Thanks for providing this tag.
This tag has a nice, smooth finish and the etching is really well-done. I'm happy to own a part of this unique and rare machine.
Like the XP-82, MotoArt twins up an amazing piece of aviation history with beautiful workmanship and artistry to achieve a fabulous product! Thank you!
Beautifully crafted tag of a unique aircraft!
The XP-82 Twin Mustang plane tag arrived quickly properly packaged. Nice memento of Korean War era military aviation.
As usual, Planetags this tag did not disappoint with this tag. Rare and unique piece to me. Thank you.
A great Plane Tag. A unique and rare opportunity to have tag for such a interesting part of aviation history!
Very first day that MA sold this, I got normal exterior, other tag already sold out. XP-82 is my favorite one when I saw the picture, maybe 40 years ago. A few weeks ago, MA resale rivet tag and I got interior rivet. Only one hole but I still love it. Thx MA I will be in touch
