The years between World Wars 1 and 2 - the Golden Age of Flight - was an incredible time as airplanes transformed from slower wood and fabric covered biplanes to faster, all-metal monoplanes. Civil aviation expanded, distance and speed records were made and broken, men and women pilots competed in cross country races. Donald A. Luscombe realized his dream to design and build a light, all-metal monocoque aircraft - the Luscombe Phantom.

The Luscombe Phantom, also known as the Luscombe Model 1, first flew in 1934 and was manufactured between 1934 and 1937. The side-by-side, two-seat cabin aircraft was of all metal construction, using a stressed-skin Duralumin fuselage. All components were built by subcontracted manufacturers then assembled and finished by Luscombe Aircraft Development Corporation at its West Trenton, NJ production facility. It was powered by a single 145-hp Warner “Super-Scarab” seven-cylinder radial engine. Only 25 were built.

OUR PLANE'S STORY

NC1043 (serial #114), owned by Andrea and Kevin Eldridge, was the 14th Phantom built. After restoration, it will be the third of the original 25 Phantoms to fly again. The Eldridges have spent over ten years in this labor of love, researching and restoring this Phantom for its return to the skies in 2023. With painstaking care, they have returned it to its original beauty. It was recently given its landing gear for the first time in 47 years. It was also reunited with the original Super Scarab 145 hp radial engine that was installed at the factory behind the distinctive restored Watters cowling. The Eldridges have provided original material removed during the restoration project.

MotoArt is incredibly honored to offer a small run of Luscombe Phantom PlaneTags, made from the original fuselage material of NC1043. The rarity of the Phantom and its important role in those early exhilarating years of flight make this a wonderful memento of the Golden Age of Aviation. Add one to your collection now.

      Old Airframe

Its insane how old this airframe is and how rare of an aircraft that Planetags got their hands on. I love the rivets and colors that came off of this really old plane.

      Rag wings forever!

I love this tag for several reasons not only is it the oldest airframe in the Planetag inventory, It's the only fabric covered aircraft. I have five different colors and only need yhe yellow to complete so I'll keep looking for the Luscombe .

      Thin for the win!

I love when PlaneTags collide with a restoration! What a fantastic tag - super thin with amazing original yellow interior primer/paint on the one I received! This tag is the definition of character and patina.

A good old piece of history.

I just received the tag, and it you can see the markings of history on it. It is great to be able to get to hold pieces of even older planes. Hopefully, more tags of older planes to come!
