Its small, nimble design was not only cost effective, but allowed more Skyhawks to fit onto the smaller aircraft carriers of the era. The subsonic, single-seat, light attack aircraft proved to be a pivotal asset during the Vietnam War; The A-4 delivered some of the first and last airstrikes of the conflict. The Blue Angels flew the Skyhawk between 1974 and 1986, as did many armed forces all over the world. As of 2021, some A-4s remain in active military service.

OUR PLANE'S STORY

Our aircraft, BuNo 139960 was constructed as an A4D-1 in 1957 and delivered to the VA-34 Blue Blasters, the first Skyhawk squadron to deploy to the Mediterranean. History puts 3148 right in the middle of a storied battle for the Japanese-held island of Nauru in 1943, when USAAF Lt. Louis Zamperini’s B-24D was shot at and badly damaged by a group of Zeros. 3148 was, by his own recollection, almost certainly flown by Miyazaki Isamu, an IJNAF ace pilot who fought in most of the South Pacific theaters. However, it was damaged beyond repair, not by combat but by bomb splinters after Taroa was bombed by F6F Hellcats.

3148, along with several other Zeros, was intended for restoration by the man who found them on Taroa, John Sterling. While on a test flight in New Guinea during World War II, it collided with a mountain; amazingly, all members onboard survived. It remained forgotten but largely intact for over 45 years until it was recovered in 1991 and brought back to the U.S. through the hard work and sheer will of Eugene and Russ Strine and the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum. Since its recovery, the Strines and the Museum have devoted their efforts to restoring the aircraft to flying condition and sharing its incredible story with the world.

OUR PLANE'S STORY

P-61s were specifically designed to locate and destroy enemy aircraft at night and in poor visibility, aided by its onboard radar. They were built with the endurance and long-range needed to patrol the night skies for hours and intercept enemy aircraft. Although design and production delays kept them from being active until the final year of World War II, they served in all theaters and filled a major need in the Pacific theater especially. 42-39445 was assigned to the 550th Night Fighter Squadron on January 6, 1945. With only 10 hours of flight time recorded on the airframe, it crashed four days later into Mount Cyclops on the north coast of New Guinea. Its missions included search and rescue operations, maritime surveillance, and law enforcement. With a range of up to 2,000 nautical miles and the ability to stay airborne for up to six hours, it was well-suited for conducting long-range patrols over vast ocean waters. Equipped with a variety of sensors - including radar, infrared cameras, and other advanced avionics - the Guardian had the ability to locate and track vessels in all types of weather conditions. The Guardian was also used to enforce U.S. laws and treaties, such as interdiction of drug shipments and illegal immigration.

OUR PLANE'S STORY

The HU-25 Guardian was developed during the 1970s, first as a business jet, by French aircraft manufacturer Dassault Aviation. Advantages of the design were unobstructed visibility for the pilot, the ability to pick up payloads of all sizes and configurations while parked or hovering, and lower production and operational costs. The design would include dynamic components of the S-56/CH-37. N807, the sole S-60 prototype, took flight for the first time on March 25, 1959. It was used to demonstrate its ability in carrying, towing and hoisting various types of cargo, and mine sweeping.

Although effective, the S-60 was underpowered and eventually succeeded by an enlarged version with more powerful engines and a six blade rotor, the S-64. The S-60, instead, was to be delivered to NASA with an adjustment of the control sensitivity that would allow it to perform precision low speed maneuvers. Before it was delivered, during a check-out flight on April 3, 1961, it became unmanageable and crashed on the Sikorsky field. N807 was damaged beyond repair and remained stored outdoors for almost 50 years. Connecticut Air and Space Center obtained the airframe in 2010. Known as “Gideon,” it was donated by FedEx and later displayed for many years at the Aerospace Museum of California, where it served as a centerpiece in the museum’s airpark.

Due to extensive corrosion from long-term outdoor display, the aircraft was carefully disassembled in late 2025. The nose and cockpit section were preserved and moved indoors for future restoration and display, while other portions of the aircraft were responsibly repurposed or scrapped. Portions of the original aircraft skin were saved and transformed into PlaneTags, ensuring that Gideon’s story continues to be shared. Decades later, material from the aircraft was recovered through Pima Air & Space Museum, which is working to restore a rare Beaufort as part of its historic collection. A portion of that material has now been transformed into PlaneTags, preserving the legacy of this WWII aircraft.
