An Igor Sikorsky Original for Your PlaneTags Collection

With its distinctive hump, the Sikorsky H-34 is one of the most recognizable helicopters in history. Originally serving as medium transport with the armed forces of 25 countries across every continent, this helicopter was brought to prominence during wars in Algeria and Southeast Asia.

From patrolling the horizon equipped for anti-submarine warfare, gunship roles, to troop evacuation and transport, search and rescue, cargo hauling, commercial airline shuttling, recovering space capsules, and even carrying presidents, the H-34 made its mark in both the military and civilian world - and has defined the role of helicopters ever since.

OUR PLANE'S STORY

The Eyes In the Sky of Anti-Submarine Warfare

Our Sikorsky HSS-1/SH-34G Seabat helicopter, manufacturer serial #58-165, was delivered to the U.S. Navy as 140121 in December 1955 as one of the 215 Anti-Submarine models built, and were re-designated UH-34G in 1962. While stationed at Michigan’s Grosse Ile Naval Air Station, the aircraft was partially damaged in a fire involving a fuel truck and a C-119 Boxcar. It was hauled to the Soplata property in 1963, and is now part of the PlaneTags Soplata Collection.

    PlaneTags are:

    • Authentic - made from actual retired aircraft fuselage, not merely stamped metal.
    • Unique -  each PlaneTag bears the color, thickness, and wear and tear from the portion of the fuselage from which it was cut and it is therefore rare to create two identical PlaneTags.
    • Collectible - each one is numbered in a limited edition and comes attached to a display card.
    • Versatile - comes with a durable metal ring, strong enough to attach to luggage or keys or display.

      Whirlybird

Ordered a tag from this whirlybird and at receiving time it shocked me. I received a beautiful dark gray tag with some snowy white dots on it.

The Square Dancing Helos of NAS Los Alamitos

Growing up on Naval bases was fun and you got to see many wonderous sights. In 1956 NAS Los Alamitos held an air show at the time the Blue Angels were flying F9F-6 Cougars, P2V Neptune's were New, and the UH-34 was the newest Helicopter in the fleet. The helo squadron wanted to show off the performance of their new whirly birds so the painted the front clam shell doors like men and women square dancers. And believe it or not they actually performed a dance with 4 birds without swapping blades. It was totally amazing to watch. I'm so glad that MA has had the opportunity to save this airframe for the future Whirlybird collectors.

awesome piece of personally related history!

Bought this tag as a present for my uncle, a retired captain of the German 'Heeresflieger' (Army Air Corps), who flew the H-34 G before converting to the Sikorsky CH-53 G. The H-34 G rose to fame in Germany as 'The Flying Angels' during the severe North Sea Flood of 1962 that destroyed the homes of 60,000 people and caused 347 fatalities, but sadly my uncle did not have one single memorabilia of his venerable H-34. So quite a touching moment for me to see this 'Old Eagle' deeply moved when holding this original piece of the H-34 in his hands!
