Wielded by the newly reorganized United States Army Air Forces during the bulk of World War II, the P-47 was effective in both the European and Pacific theaters as a short- to medium-range escort fighter in air-to-air combat and ground attack. Determined to outperform the relentless Luftwaffe fighters, 15,636 Thunderbolts were produced. Designed to carry eight .50-caliber machine guns – and later adding five-inch rockets or a bomb load of 2,500 pounds – made the Thunderbolt one of the heavyweights of the war weighing in at 8 tons.     Great Way to Remember

    planetags are a great way to remember awesome aircraft. The P-47 for me is simply remembering a book I read as a kid about a WW II European Theater ace and what that aircraft was like.
