PRESERVE HISTORY WITH EVERY PURCHASE

The release of our first Messerschmitt PlaneTag offers something a little different – the chance for our aviation enthusiasts to assist in the restoration and preservation of aviation history. Proceeds from the sale of these authentic Bf 109 PlaneTags will be donated to the Spirit of Flight Foundation in support of their mission to restore the notorious Bf 109 Messerschmitt, Werk Nummer 10145, as well as their charitable work.

The 10145 was built in Leipzig, Germany in 1942, serving as a Norwegian patrol aircraft which flew the Murmansk sector of Russia. The aircraft was shot down in aerial combat with multiple Soviet fighters during an escort mission for Ju 88 bomber aircraft on July 19th, 1942. The aircraft was flown by FW. Leopold Knier, who bailed out at an altitude of about 3000 meters after it was crippled by the Soviet P-40. The aircraft remained in Northern Russia until it was rescued by Warbird Recovery in the winter of 1994, and is currently under restoration for the Spirit of Flight Foundation.

OUR PLANE'S STORY

Our Bf 109G-10 / U4 Messerschmitt, Werk Nummer 610937 was built at the Erla Werke in Leipzig, Germany in 1944. Abandoned at Zeltweg airfield in Austria at the end of World War II, this plane went on to serve in the Bulgarian and Yugoslavian Air Forces into the 1950s.

These PlaneTags are cut from the original wing panels which were removed during its restoration, and the fully restored plane is now on display at the American Heritage Museum.

“Some aviation enthusiasts have expressed concern that we’re chopping up historic, display-worthy planes – but we’re rescuing our aircraft and original parts from destructive desert and forest environments, where they would have just continued to degrade into nothing,” says MotoArt owner Dave Hall.

“With our new Messerschmitt PlaneTag, our customers have an opportunity to do something really special and have a hand in preserving aviation history – by helping renovate a truly historic plane for everyone to see and enjoy.”
Our newest PlaneTags are numbered to 5,000 .

“The authentic, rustic look of this tag really stands out from other livery,” says Hall.

“It’s a must-have to add a new finish to your collection.”

    My Bf 109 plane tag

This was one of the two plane tags from my first order. Big fan of historical aircraft, especially WWII era ones. Have seen so many in museums and collections including ones flying which includes a flyable Bf 109 in a local collection. Like most people, no way could I ever afford one of these precious aircraft but the plane tags allows us to own a piece of one. Was so pleased with receiving this plane tag and starting my collection.

    Awesome Piece of Luftwaffe History

This is a great piece of aviation history. I got two of these tags and they are both different. On is very scratched aluminum, while the other is a darker and very patina tag. Definitely recommend!!!

great original piece of the 'Augsburg Eagle'!

Living just a few miles south of the former Messerschmitt production plant at Augsburg-Haunstetten I just had to add this tag to my collection - just awesome to hold an original piece of the 'Augsburg Eagle', as the '109 was called, in my hands. The delicate etching of the plane's top view on the tag is outstanding!

A bright tag but a dark history

What an amazing piece of WW2 history. There's obviously the fair share of U.S. and Allied WW2 aircraft tags available but German ones are definitely harder to come by. The absolute beast of the Wehrmacht from the late 1930s this aircraft piece sits with my Zero on the 'Axis' aisle.

    History in your hand! BF109

I honestly had no idea it was possible to own a piece of history of a famous WW 2 aircraft and at the same time help preserve other WW 2 aircraft in the process! The story behind the 109 was amazing to find out and owning a skin of this war bird is truly incredible as there is only 5,000 in the world that can say that! What an amazing site and company to offer a piece of aircraft history that fits in your hand!

The best parts of my collection

By my count, I've purchased 24 PlaneTags: 5 Commercial, 1 General, and 18 Vintage. The Vintage tags are part of my "multi-media" airplane collection. For the Bf 109 I have artist Stan Stoke's print "Defiant, But Doomed" which shows pilot Adolf Galland's yellow-nosed Bf 109E, Galland's signature on the print, Galland's autobiography "The First and the Last", a Hobby Master diecast model of Galland's Bf 109E, and best of all, an Bf 109 PlaneTag. The PlaneTag is great!

    MESSERSCHMITT - BF 109

Really happy with the product and service, a great way to own a piece of WW2 history. I love the back story on the aircraft giving an even more in-depth look into the history of the aircraft, I will definitely be getting more products in the future keep up the good work. the only problem I have is I wished I had the whole aircraft not just a small piece.

    Getting to expensive

I like the item I purchased. I had planned on buying more but the prices are getting stupidly expensive for a piece of metal. I sincerely doubt I will be purchasing more. More power to you if you can sell them at that price, but I don’t think they are worth the money.

    Pretty nice piece of history!

This is the second PlaneTag I've bought, and it is quite nice. It is (obviously) thicker than the other two I got -both from the A6M3- and, as with the others, the rounded finish of the sides feels smooth and pleasant to the touch. If there's something to be improved, it would be the engraving/stamping of the information on the metal. While the first PlaneTag I bought (a... mildly olive grey A6M3 plaque) has information flush to the metal, in this one you can feel it was painted on. Not much of an issue if you plan on displaying this item on a shelf (as I will), but if you do plan to use it on a circumstance in which it will face some wear and tear, I don't know how much the drawing of the airplane and the information on the front of the tag will last for.
